Cholesterol is a combination of lipid and steroid. It is an important part of the outer lining of cells, as it waterproofs the cell membranes in the body, and plays a vital role in the circulation of blood in humans. Cholesterol is transported through the body by lipoproteins: Low density lipoprotein (LDL) transports cholesterol to the cells; High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol soaks up cholesterol and transports it back to the liver for production of bile acids which help in the digestion of food.
